Title: Pre-Medical Technologist (Clinical Laboratory Scientist)/Medical Laboratory Technician (Pre-MT/ MLT)

Position Summary:
Pre-MT/MLTs learn the technical ability and problem-solving skills to perform all tests (both manual and automated) in the clinical laboratory. They learn the capability to conduct all aspects of procedural and instrument troubleshooting, method evaluation, establishment and maintenance of quality management and safety programs, as well as gain knowledge interpreting the technical acceptability of test results. The PreMT/MLT learns management and supervisory skills, and an ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with other members of the health care team, representatives of external regulatory agencies, and service consumers. In-depth knowledge of the pathophysiologic and biochemical basis for various laboratory procedures is essential for correlation of test results and to ensure optimal communication of information with health professionals.
Pre-MT/MLTs perform laboratory tests, with a network of steps and variables, according to established protocols under the direct supervision of a Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Technician. They must properly collect, handle, process and store specimens. Laboratory scientists operate instruments that are often computer-integrated and networked and use computerized information systems. Pre-MT/MLTs must be supervised at all times while performing Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Technician duties. PreMT/MLTs may not report any non-waived lab results.
The Pre-MT/MLT collects laboratory specimens by venous, arterial or capillary puncture to aid in the assessment of a patient's medical condition. A Pre-MT/MLT has basic understanding of human anatomy and physiology, the overall sections which comprise a typical laboratory, as well as an in depth knowledge of specimen collection tools and techniques. A Pre-MT/MLT is able to approach, communicate and positively interact with patients and other health care professionals while performing their duties, which may also involve stressful situations.
A Pre-MT/MLT must have the capability to conduct all aspects of waived testing and procedures, method evaluation, maintenance of quality management and safety programs, as well as interpret the technical acceptability oftest results. A Pre-MT/MLT must be able to perform waived laboratory tests, with a network of steps and variables, according to established protocols and with limited supervision. Strict adherence to safety and infection control procedures is required. A Pre-MT/MLT is able to assess a patient's condition and know how to obtain the specimen required while keeping the patient's best interest as the primary concern. This is done without direct supervision; knowing when to consult a supervisor for assistance in determining appropriate actions is also required. Pre-MT/MLT will operate computers in a laboratory's information system. Transfer to another department within the hospital may not occur before 24 months of service in this position.

Education:
Required: High School diploma or equivalent; currently enrolled in a program for medical technology or one of the chemical, physical or biologic sciences, including ( or in addition to) a 12-month accredited medical technology training program.
Conditional -- Graduate from an accredited program for MT/MLT program within 18 months of hire.

Experience:
Required: None
Preferred: Two years working in all disciplines of the laboratory environment.
Upon hire, you must provide a copy of the Immunization Record and disclose your current influenza immunization.
